Removal of literally nay of these software is a pain as you do not want people and/or other software to tamper with these applications. The more you want out of the software, the more resource overheads it will use. I have used many Corporate & Enterprise versions of AV & security software but I think most are quite ok. Your job is making sure it is in good shape when it is handed over to them, and telling them to keep it that way. Once a PC is in someone else's hands, it's theirs. That said, when it comes to endpoints, while I concur with adrian above regarding how kids will attempt to bypass security and so on - you can't help that. Thankfully, I'm now at a giant consulting org - employees numbering in the 100's of thousands - and we're using Windows Defender quite successfully. Bad performance, buggy, and a hideous pain to remove. I had Sophos endpoint at my last workplace, and it was total dog-poop.

If it is a school and it depends if you are running in full Domain mode or BYOD mode, I would use some centralized security system as you will have students trying to bypass the security solutions, unless you are in BYOD mode and have totally isolated those lappy from the network. What computers are you using in terms of specs (CPU, RAM, storage) ?Įvery application especially security software will have certain overheads especially if you expect it to scan (files, system, desktop, mapped drives, USB drives etc).

Even with minimal items turned on through Sophos Central. I was a advocate for Sophos AV a couple of years ago, however I have noticed it is slowing down our computers. Is anyone using Windows Defender (Non ATP) in a school environment? Obviously being in a school environment, students don't tend to put much thought into what they may download onto their device or the type of websites they may visit! The work place that I am at is a school environment with students aged between 12-18. I know this has been covered a couple of times, however I am weighing up the options to remove Sophos AV and move to Windows Defender.
